We have had an exciting couple of months at CBESS working on our end of project outputs; a carbon predication tool for ecosystem managers and a complimentary citizen science app.
Outreach
CBESS: the saltmarsh app
We are an island nation, and yet we know surprisingly little about parts of our coastline. An appeal to ‘citizen scientists’ hopes to put this right by encouraging us to collect information about our salt marshes to fill in the gaps.
Bangor University: science festival
March saw the return of the annual Bangor University Science Festival and this year, CBESS joined forces with the RESILCOAST projectfor an interactive saltmarsh stand in the Hidden Worlds Exhibition.
University of Cambridge: science festival
Once again, CBESS was well represented at the University of Cambridge Science Festival on 12 March 2016, with a wide range of demonstrations on how tides and waves shape the UK coastline.
Winter 2015-16: CBESS’ first data paper published and other news
Bangor University and University of Cambridge have had a very productive winter, in this season’s progress report Bangor are the focus. In the spring we will focus on Cambridge and their experiences of influencing professional stakeholders with CBESS science.
University of St Andrews: mud to mammals
CBESS and the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) at the University of St Andrews joined forces for the Dundee Science Festival. We spent a fun-filled afternoon at Menzies Community Centre in Dundee.
Autumn 2015: career progression, outreach and policy
This autumn there has been a lot of activity behind the scenes better understating our data and the story it is telling us. However, we have found the time to leave our desks and talk and engage with fellow researchers and the public.
Queen’s University Belfast: canned ecology
At Queen’s University Belfast, Prof Mark Emmerson, Dr Nessa O’Connor (of CBESS) , Prof Jaimie Dick and Dr Tancredi Caruso recently won an award from NERC, part of their Summer of Science and 50th anniversary celebrations.
Summer 2015: a mixed bag of fieldwork, meetings and engagement
With less than a year until CBESS comes to an end, we are increasingly busy working on Theme 2 (context) and Theme 3 (scale). We have also been back in the field, in preparation for development of the Ecosystem Provisioning Tool. There have also some interesting collaborations between science and art.
University of Cambridge: science, art and CBESS – over a pint
Pint of Science; a science festival is bringing learning to your local. The festival takes place over three evenings in May and happens simultaneously in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, USA, Spain, Germany, Brazil and Australia.
