The CBESS team met in York at the start of January for two days to discuss the best way to incorporate scale and context into our data analysis and how to best approach up-scaling biodiversity and ecosystem services and finally the creation of novel tools for Ecosystem Service Provisioning.

Autumn 2014: our data keeps growing
As autumn cools the air and our coasts become increasingly wild, wet and windy, CBESS members give a recap of events over the last three months. The collection of CBESS data continues to grow, with more and more samples being processed each day. This is providing the Data Analysis Working Group (DAWG) with an increasingly complex dataset to explore. With Theme 1 (socio-economic and ecological data collection) nearing completion, researchers are beginning to look at Themes 2 and 3: scale effects and context dependency on biodiversity and ecosystem service relationships.
CCRU: largest ever saltmarsh flume experiment
Large-scale flume experiment shows that salt marshes reduce the height of waves during storm surge conditions by nearly 20%
CCRU: the salt marsh experiment
Salt marshes as sea defences
Salt marsh ecosystems are important to the local, regional, and global community for many reasons, these include providing a buffer against waves and tidal currents.
Summer 2013: what have we been doing?
In January and February 2013 the CBESS Team spent two weeks in the Essex Marshes and Morecambe Bay, respectively (the first of two field campaigns). Rain, hail, ice, snow and wind were overcome in order to collect enough samples at four spatial scales to quantify the biodiversity and related ecosystem services in two very different bio-geographical regions.
University of Cambridge: salt marshes as sea defences
The Cambridge Coastal Research Unit (University of Cambridge) is monitoring the sea defence function of saltmarshes at two saltmarsh sites in Morecambe Bay and three in Essex.
INTERCOL 2013
The Cambridge Coastal Research Unit (University of Cambridge) will be presenting preliminary findings of their measurements at the INTECOL 2013 conference in London on Wednesday 21st August in the session on Marine Ecology with an oral presentation on “Dynamics of the coastal protection service of salt marshes across a UK west coast – east coast gradient”.
BBC News at Ten
If you missed it Dr Iris Moeller was on BBC News at Ten, talking about the importance of natural sea defences like salt marshes in light of the 60th anniversary of the great flood the devastated east and south-east coasts of England.
BBC News – Legacy of Britain’s great flood
A grim saga of ignorance and incompetence that allowed a vicious storm to kill more than 300 people is remembered in dozens of coastal communities today.
