Putting a value on Morecambe Bay

Salt marshes and mudflats provide us with many benefits, these include: recreation, carbon storage, protection from flooding, food production and clean water. Unfortunately, these benefits are in decline. There is evidence that some of this decline is due to the loss of animal and plant diversity, which plays an important role in providing nature’s benefits.

Salt marshes and mudflats are the most sensitive of our coastal environments to human induced change.

We will focus on understanding how the microbes, plants and animals that live in these threatened areas contribute to our natural environment, economy and society.
